Hazardous Waste Management

Hazardous waste disposal is governed by federal, state, and local regulations. EHSREM oversees the development and implementation of proper management practices for the handling, storage, and disposal of chemical and hazardous wastes generated on campus. These practices have been developed to not only comply with regulations, but also to prevent harm to human health and the environment.

Requirements

The TXST campus community generates a variety of regulated waste streams through research, teaching, clinics, studios, maintenance, and construction projects. Each University employee, student, volunteer and industry partner must comply with the campus hazardous waste management policies and applicable regulations. It is the responsibility of all waste generators to understand the policies and take applicable training to ensure that waste in their work area is properly managed.

Are you generating hazardous or non-hazardous chemical waste in your work area? If you are new to the University and you have a laboratory, studio, or clinic using hazardous materials, chemicals, or equipment, please fill out the Lab Check In form so we can meet to determine any waste streams you may be generating, and set up a Satellite Accumulation Area for your work area.

EHSREM provides waste containers and picks up hazardous and chemical wastes on Fridays unless otherwise arranged on a case-by-case basis. All wastes must be properly labeled with the hazards and the content and containers must be in good condition. For special arrangements, contact EHSREM directly by phone or e-mail.

Noncompliance with any hazardous waste regulation may result in substantial fines and penalties for the university. The university may be cited or fined for numerous types of violations ranging from improperly labeling a waste container to intentionally disposing of hazardous waste incorrectly.
