Automobile Insurance

Auto Accidents

If you are involved in an auto accident while using a rental vehicle, it must be reported to the police and rental car agency immediately. Proof of insurance is located in the glove compartment or on the windshield of all contract rental vehicles. In addition, you must report the accident to EHSREM (512-245-3616) within 24 hours. For additional information about rental cars and travel please refer to the Texas State University Travel Office.

For more information on accident procedures, please visit the Fleet Management Accident Instruction webpage.

Proof of Liability Insurance

Please contact Katherine Beamer (512-245-3616) to verify that your department vehicle is covered. A copy of the liability insurance card is required in the vehicle at all times. Contact the Fleet Manager (Mr. Brian McKay) to obtain a copy of the insurance liability card for your state vehicle

Rental Vehicles

When you rent a vehicle from Advantage, Avis, or Enterprise under the State of Texas contract, the rental rate includes two kinds of insurance:

  • LDW (Loss/Damage Waiver or comprehensive), which covers all damage to the rental vehicle if it was rented under the state contract; and
  • Liability, which covers persons and property outside the rental vehicle. The amount of this extended liability insurance is $100,000 bodily injury per person, $300,000 bodily injury per occurrence; and $50,000 property damage per occurrence, for a total of $350,000 per accident.

There is NO NEED to purchase additional insurance coverage using a rental car.
