15 Passenger Vans
General Information
The safe travel of students, faculty, staff, and guests for university functions to and from events and activities at Texas State University is the goal of this policy. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has determined that rollover crash risks are greatly increased with 10 or more people riding in a 15 passenger van. This policy provides minimum safety requirements for driving 15 passenger vans owned, rented, leased, or borrowed for use by Texas State faculty, staff, or students.
Insurance
If borrowing a 15-passenger van, the insurance must be reviewed to ensure Texas State will be covered. Insurance information needs to be sent to ehsrem. Please allow up to 72 business hours for processing in advance of borrowing the 15 passenger van.

Driver Registration
At the discretion of EHSREM, a driver with a current commercial driver's license with passenger endorsement may be exempted from training for the term for the license.
15 Passenger Van Training
All 15 passenger van drivers must complete a two-part training course through EHSREM. Training courses must be repeated every 3 years. Training courses will need to be scheduled well in advance. Any costs will be borne by the driver's department.
A minimum of 10 trainees are needed for the Trainer to come and spend a day at the University. A maximum of 20 people for a single day of training.
Training Description
15 Passenger Van Training is divided into two parts. Part 1 consists of a 60-minute classroom training. Part 2 consists of the hands-on driving test, which takes 10-15 minutes per trainee. Depending on the number of trainees, driving tests may take up to but no more than 60 minutes. Upon passing both parts of the training, you will be issued a 15 Passenger Van Training Certification.
Note: If a department owns a van, we will use that van in question for the training. If a van is unavailable to use, then rental may be needed.
